Indian Coffee Plantations

Indian Coffee plantations exist since 18th Century, thanks to early success of British Entrepreneurs. Indian coffee is identified as coffee grown under shade on the world coffee map. It’s primarily grown in the ecologically sensitive regions of the Western and Eastern Ghats. Among the 25 biodiversity hotspots of the world. www.coffeeboard.gov.in

Carbon Sequestration

“Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. It is one method of reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with the goal of reducing global climate change.” https://www.usgs.gov

Our Endeavour - Educate Indian Coffee Planters on :

  • Carbon sequestration in Indian coffee plantations
  • Estimated carbon sequestered in tons/acre annually
  • Commercial opportunities for coffee planters in carbon trading

About Me

Hello,   I’am Ahaan Avinash, a 16 year old grade 12 student from Bangalore International School. Proud to say that I come from the coffee plantation community. Our estate “Haliudbay” is located in Hawalli/Guddadur, Aldur, Chickmaglur, Karnataka, India.

  • My passion and interests are in science, technology and agriculture. In future, I hope to incorporate in my area of work. The time spent in my holidays in our estate was a great experience and learning on the climate and its changes over the years.
  • In my 9th grade, I did a water project on the hydrology of our Village Hawalli. This taught me a lot about our village’s rainfall and water runoff measures.
  • To learn more about the effect of climate change on coffee cultivation, I visited CCRI (Coffee Research Station) in Balehonnur, Karnataka. I met Dr. Jeena Devasia (Plant Physiologist) who shared her knowledge on carbon sequestration and shade grown Indian coffee plantations. She encouraged me to pursue a research on carbon credits.
  • This conversation opened my eyes on the immense toil and hard work that has been put in to preserve shade grown coffee plantations for centuries by the coffee growing community of planters and the people who have worked on the land.
  • My elementary research has tried to showcase the magnitude of carbon sequestration by our shade grown coffee plantations.
  • I have aimed to combine carbon sequestration, commercial opportunities in  carbon credits and the potential of the carbon credit market.
  • I have tried with the best of my ability to share my findings and I hope they are useful as a start to the carbon credit conversation.
